20. Into the cradle of tango

I landed in Buenos Aires on November 1st, taking a quick flight from Mendoza. November is my favourite time to visit home: it’s spring (perfect weather), flights are affordable, and everyone is in the mood to reconnect before the year ends.

My goal for this trip, aside from seeing family and friends, was to expand my piano repertoire for next year’s commitments. The city’s energy really inspired me to work on some new tango arrangements.

It was a whirlwind of social gatherings: endless barbecues (asados), beers, and reunions. I barely had time to see anyone twice, but it was wonderful to catch up with so many friends.

The trip wasn’t without drama, though. I needed a yellow fever vaccine for my next destination, but private clinics were out of stock, and public hospitals were booked until February. It felt like last year’s passport nightmare all over again. Miraculously, a doctor I met randomly at a bar saved the day. He managed to get me vaccinated at a military hospital on the very last possible day. A huge thank you to that stranger!

I also extended my stay from four weeks to five because my sister and her boyfriend flew in from London just as I was supposed to leave. It turned into a fantastic family reunion.

Buenos Aires remains as chaotic and attractive as ever. Being with my loved ones has recharged me for the year ahead.

Thank you, Buenos Aires. Thank you, motherland!
